A New Beginning from Abstract Cubism to Abstract Figuration. Zhao Jiangfei Exhibition
UniArt Gallery at the New Bulgarian University presents the exhibition of artist Zhao Jianfei – A New Beginning from Abstract Cubism to Abstract Figuration. The exhibition marks thirty years of the author's life and creative activity in Bulgaria – three decades of consistent exploration of form, color and space as carriers of inner rhythm and thought.
Zhao Jianfei's philosophy and painting practice during these years come together in his concept of "Personal Meditation on Abstract Painting" – a reflection on painting as a process of thinking through form.
According to his book-album Re-Depart from Abstract-Cubism Toward Abstract Figuration in Painting (2025, NBU), the artist sees abstract figuration as a natural continuation of modernism – a direction in which abstract structure preserves the human presence and emotional energy of living gesture. In his canvases, form does not deny the visible, but transforms it to express the tension between construction and feeling, between the discipline of the mind and the freedom of the pictorial act.
